HOW TO BECOME A SINGING MEMBER
An audition is required to be considered for singing membership in Cantaré. Auditions are held year-round as openings occur. Interested singers must have previous choral singing experience. The audition consists of an interview with the conductor as well as assessments in sight-reading, interval recognition, vocal range and quality. In addition, the prospective member should be prepared to sing a short excerpt from the standard vocal repertoire, a hymn, or folk song without accompaniment. Being a trained singer or a superb sight-reader will not guarantee membership; how quickly one can learn and how well one's voice fits the group are more important factors.
WHAT'S THE COMMITMENT?
We usually present three "formal" concerts each year. We begin preparing in September for the holiday concerts which occur in the first part of December. In January, we begin rehearsals for a second concert presented in March. The third concert is generally in early to mid-May. There may also be special events that members are asked to sing for, such as Christmas ships, baseball games, private concerts, etc.
Regular rehearsals are held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in north Seattle. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled just prior to a concert.
WHAT ELSE IS EXPECTED?
Cantaré Vocal Ensemble depends on its members for the majority of ticket sales. It's hoped that the members are so excited about upcoming concerts that they want all their friends, family and work associates to attend. Several weeks before concert dates, members are given tickets to sell and instructions for selling the tickets and turning in the money and unsold tickets.
Membership fee is $25 per month. This fee includes the cost of music, which is the singer's to keep. Scholarships are available for some or all of this fee, depending upon need. Members also purchase performance attire and music folders.
